The V Word 11/15/2009
Today was our first fundraiser of the 2010 season, at Pinsetter Bar and Bowl. I think I speak for everyone when I say that a fabulous time was had!

I had the pleasure of doing an hour shift of roaming 50/50 sales. This included approaching groups of complete strangers to see if they wanted to support V-Day through buying tickets. My spiel was that we were raising money to help end violence against women, but didn't get into the details of our productions, etc. Mostly because there wasn't time and most of their eyes were already glazed over with that "please don't ask me for money" look, but still...I'm so used to being part of this fantastic community where we all celebrate our vaginas and our power and our love. I forget sometimes that a lot of people get a bit freaked out when we start throwing around the "V" word. But, that's what V-Day is all about, right? Reclaiming the word? To say it isn't dirty, but a part of ourselves, a part of womanhood?

I'm not exactly sure what I'm getting at, but I think a small (or not so small?) part of ending violence is breaking the silence not only about the violence itself, but about our bodies. How can we protect and value something if we aren't able to acknowledge it? I'm looking forward to the next opportunity I have to tell someone I am part of The Vagina Monologues. I love this time of year.
